A FAMILY RUN COOPERATIVE PRESCHOOL

Applications

Parents interested in enrolling their children at Family Preschool are invited to attend our Annual Open House, Thursday, January 22nd, 2009, from 7pm-9pm. Click here for more information! This event allows people to meet our teachers and co-op members, tour our school, hear a first-hand description of how the co-op runs, and answer questions. After the Open House, you may sign up to observe a weekday class.

Enrollment and Scholarship applications are available for you to print from this web site, using Adobe Acrobat Reader (free software that you can download by following the Adobe link below). To apply to Family Preschool, please complete the application, being sure to sign that you have read and understood our goals and philosophies, the responsibilities of being in our co-op, and the registration information provided on this web page. Then mail in your completed application with your $30 nonrefundable check made out to Family Preschool.

Each January, spaces in the program are allotted first to currently enrolled children, then siblings of currently and previously enrolled children. If there are more priority children than a program can accommodate, those children will be admitted by lottery.

Registration for the general public takes place by mail. In mid-February, a random lottery from mailed-in applications is used to fill any openings. A nominal fee of $30 is charged for processing each application and holding a spot on our waiting list (this can be waived in cases of financial need). Following the lottery, families are notified of their acceptance or placement on the waiting list. Applications from the general public received after the lottery will be processed as received and added to the end of the waiting list. The registrars will consider the ratio of girls to boys in each class when offering positions to new families and will attempt to maintain an equal balance by offering positions to applicants of the minority sex.

If your child is offered a space at Family Preschool, a nonrefundable supply fee will be due as your acceptance of the offer. Also, a tuition deposit, equal to one monthÕs tuition, will be due within two weeks of acceptance. As returning families increase their number of program days in the school each year, the deposit is increased to the amount of the new tuition, with the current deposit applied to the balance of the new deposit. The full deposit, less any unpaid tuition or fees, will be refunded when the child graduates from Family Preschool, as long as all co-op responsibilities have been met.

Just Here for a Year?

If your family needs Family Preschool for one year only, please let us know on your application. We have reserved a few spaces in our 2-year-old program for people who can only make a one-year commitment to the co-op. Such families include:

  • Families in Durham or Chapel Hill for a fellowship, internship, or educational program;
  • Families who will enter their children in another school the following year because of priority status in that school, such as Friends School, Duke School for Children, and others (some of these schools don't have a 2-year-old program);
  • Families on sabbatical.

Please contact us for more information on one-year contract spaces.
