Classes and Daily Routine

Family Preschool strives for gender-balanced classes for children aged 1-4 years of age (and children who turn 5 during the school year). Our school year runs from September through May, with many opportunities for contact throughout the summer months.

Class Options

Age is determined by the child's age on August 31 of the school year in which they will be enrolled.

The 1-Year-Old Program

This program is a very gentle introduction to a small group environment (6 children) that allows children a brief time away from parents and a chance to get used to alternate caregivers and peers. This program has reduced co-op hour requirements (see What is a Co-Op? for more details).

Family Preschool's 1-year-old program, also known as the PMO program, has a 1-day class on Wednesday mornings and a 2-day class on Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Children who are 1 year old by Aug. 31, but not yet 2, may attend either class or both classes for a total of 3 days a week. In keeping with the central role of family as part of the school, parents help in the class as helping parents several times throughout the school year.

The PMO program strives to provide each child with a sense of safety, security, and enjoyment as each experiences a new setting outside of his or her home. Daily activities will follow a similar schedule each day and will include a free play time when the children can explore the classroom and play or participate in a craft project, a short gathering time in which songs and movement are featured, outside time, and snack. Every morning at PMO, children will have many opportunities to exercise their gross and fine motor skills, explore social relationships, integrate more and more verbal communication into their interactions, and broaden their sensory skills.

Children are welcome to attend Family Preschool for just the PMO, or the preference to continue into our 2-year-old class may be indicated on the application.

The 2-Year-Old Program

There are 2 groups of 2-year-old children at FPS. One group of 8 children meets Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays (3-day program), and the other group of 8 children meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays (2-day program). Each group has one teacher, who is assisted each day by a helping parent.

The children in the 2-year-old program spend most of their mornings engaged in free play in the classroom, where they may choose from a variety of activities such as a daily art project, reading a book in the quiet area, building with blocks, playing with play dough, or enjoying sand and water play. A brief gathering time gives the children a chance for more structured music and movement play. After snack time, the children spend the final part of the morning on the playground.

The 3- and 4-Year-Old Program

Our 3- and 4-year-old children share 3 large classrooms with 3 staff teachers. Two helping parents assist the teachers each day. Three-year-old children attend school 4 mornings per week (Tuesday through Friday) while 4-year-old children attend all 5 weekday mornings. Each teacher has a mixed age gathering of 8-9 children who spend gathering and snack time together. The remainder of the school day is spent with the larger group of 3- and 4-year-old children playing outside and at center time.

During center time, the children are free to play throughout the classrooms and participate in the center activities the teachers have prepared for that day. The teachers and helping parents are always on hand to help the children when needed during center time; however the children themselves direct their play and choose where and how they will explore the classroom and materials. On a typical day, children will be able to play at the sand or water table, build with large or small blocks, create an art project, paint, play dress-up, assemble puzzles, or explore the science project of the day. Special projects are often made available such as a woodworking or a cooking project. After center time and clean-up, the children return to their small groups for gathering time. Then, each day ends as it begins, with time spent outside on the playground.

3- and 4-year-old children attend school Tuesday through Friday.

  • Hours: 9 a.m. - 12 p.m. (with an add-on option of Lunch Bunch, which ends at 12:50 p.m.)

Rising Kindergarteners (children ages 4 and 5) attend school all 5 days of the week. Monday is the day without the 3-year-old students, and there is a pre-K themed curriculum.

  • Monday hours: 9 a.m. - 12:50 p.m. (Lunch Bunch is required on Mondays for 5 day children)
  • Ratio: Approximately 1:4 (1 teacher, 2 helping parents)

Snack Policy

Snack is an important time for children to learn and practice socialization skills. Generally snack consists of one fruit or vegetable and one starch. At Family Preschool, snack is provided by the school and all snacks served adhere to our Allergy-Safe for All Children policy. Food items containing medically-documented allergens are not brought into the school for snacks for any children, including food brought for special celebrations.

Lunch Bunch

Four- and five-day day kids have the option of participating in Lunch Bunch for an extra fee of $30 per day per month. Lunch bunch extends the day by 50 minutes, and is offered Monday - Thursday. Lunches brought from home for Lunch Bunch do not follow the allergy-free policy. Children are not allowed to share their lunches with their friends. There is also an “unofficial” lunch bunch during which you can bring you own lunch and stay with your child as long as you wish.
